Myers Elementary School, Gritty to the Core

Myers-Elementary-School-Gritty-to-the-Core“How gritty are you?”
Has anyone ever asked you this question? If you’re a Portage student, chances are you have been asked by a teacher, principal, or fellow classmate. PTS focuses on a core value each month and GRIT is this month’s focus. Grit is defined as “Courage and resolve; strength of character.”

Ivy League professor & former teacher, Dr. Angela Lee Duckworth, found that self-control and grit are better predictors of success than IQ, talent, or household income. For this reason, we seek to promote this value in all our students.

This year, Mr. Phillip Dietrich’s fifth grade students at Myers Elementary have taken the initiative to develop a classroom bulletin board dedicated to PTS’s “Core Value of the Month.” Last month’s “Zest” board has been replaced by this month’s “Grit” board and each month the students organize class activities to align with the value. Portage grit won’t quit!
