Portage Township Schools Update, February 17, 2017

Aylesworth Elementary Porta-Botz
Aylesworth Porta-Botzs joined the Crisman Indians at Robotics competition Saturday at Colonel Wheeler Middle School in Crown Point. The Indians had an 8th place finish and the Porta-Botz 5th grade team finished 23rd and the 4th grade team 34th. We learned a lot about teamwork, patience, and perseverance after much mishap with our B bot. Our 4th grade team is excited to take what we learned and apply it to getting a jump start on next years program.

Myers Elementary
Every year Myers Elementary students participate in a fundraiser called Jump Rope for Heart. This fundraiser benefits the American Heart Association. This year, Myers’ students learned a new jump rope skill in honor of hearts that need healing. Introducing, the Chinese Jump Rope!!! Students learned two jumping patterns to practice with the skill level increasing in difficulty as levels are completed. With 120 students participating, Myers Elementary raised over $5,500!

Saylor Elementary
Mrs. Campbell's 4th grade students LOVE angles. After working on a geometry lesson, Zander Ezra, Alena Hennings and Caleb Holtzman decided to make their own angles using carnations. They made right, obtuse and acute angles with their flowers. What a great way to learn and have fun at the same time! #pts_excels

PHS Social Studies
PHS Social Studies teacher Mark Marvin attended the #GoOpen conference at Warren Township Schools in Indianapolis on February 10th, 2017. While there, he had the opportunity to meet Indiana's new Superintendent of Public Instruction, Dr. Jennifer McCormick.

PHS Business and Media Classes
Students from different Business and Media classes visited the Southshore Convention Center to learn about numerous career fields from the employees who work there. They had the opportunity to hear from almost every career field imaginable. They heard stories about each individual employee, and the path they took to get where they are. It was also a great networking opportunity to visit with a company that always looks to hire from Northwest Indiana.

PHS German Club
German Club celebrated Valentine's Day with a party on Valentine's Day. Students crafted bookmarks out of discontinued upcycled paint sample strips. Pictured here holding bookmarks made at German Club are Left to Right: Makenzie Wilcox, Brittney Akers, and Ashley Ksenak.
