NiSource Charitable Foundation Helping IU Northwest Equip New Arts and Sciences Building

To help equip and fit Indiana University Northwest’s new Arts and Sciences Building with the latest tools and technologies that will help lead to the success of students, NiSource Charitable Foundation, presented by NIPSCO, is matching all gifts to the Arts on Broadway fundraising initiative at 100%, up to $25,000.

As two-thirds of the 126,300 square-foot, $45 million building is complete, IU Northwest now turns their attention to bringing the halls of the Arts and Sciences Building to life with modern, innovative spaces for learning and teaching, a place for students to pursue their passions and collaborate, and a cultural center for the enjoyment of all of Northwest Indiana.

"NIPSCO is proud to partner with Indiana University Northwest as they continue to raise the bar and provide new educational opportunities in Northwest Indiana," said Rick Calinski, Public Affairs Manager at NIPSCO.

"As a company, we will continue to look for new ways to support education that positively impacts the customers we are privileged to serve," Calinski added.

The three-story Arts and Sciences Building is located at the corner of Broadway and 35th Street and will house IU Northwest’s fine and performing arts programs, as well as academic and administration space for the College of Arts and Sciences. A new 500-seat auditorium and 100-seat black-box (experimental) studio theater is also in the plans.

“Serving as a creative cornerstone for IU Northwest, the Arts & Sciences building will provide innovative, modern facilities for teaching and learning, a place for students to collaborate and pursue their passions, and a cultural center for all of Northwest Indiana to enjoy,” said IUN Chancellor, William J. Lowe.

“This new building will better position and prepare our theatre and fine art students for the real world, an adventure that may take them from Broadway…to Broadway.”

Theater student, Joshua Kime, added, “I’m excited for this new theater space because it will have a lot more modern technology than what I’m used to working with right now. This is technology being used in theaters in Chicago and New York, and places that I want to act someday.”

“When I finally do go to these places, I will have experienced this and I will be fully prepared to act there,” said Kime. “This will ultimately help me be a better actor, performer and person.”

Construction of the Arts and Sciences Building serves as a cornerstone of the redevelopment goals of the City of Gary through the University Park Plan, which looks to focus on new investment along Broadway and on 35th Avenue.

As a cost-saving measure, and to help spur innovation, 30% of the building will be shared with Ivy Tech Community College, including a “one-stop-shop” for enrollment and admission services. In addition to opening up the building to more students from the Region, the colocation will also contribute to strengthening the pathway of Ivy Tech students to completing their four-year degrees at IU Northwest. The remainder of the building will include classrooms and informal study spaces to be share by both campuses.
