Portage Township Schools Back in Session in 2016

Dr-Richard-Weigel-2016School has started and it is wonderful to have all the kids back for another year. Great schools are made up of great groups of kids and our diversity makes our district one of the best in the region.

We are rich because our kids care about each other and work together in collaborative teams in their learning environment. We are rich because our teachers are exemplary using the latest technology and instructional methods.

We are rich because we believe that every child can reach his or her full potential as we help every student to succeed.

Three of our four district goals speak to the strong positive culture in our schools. We create that culture through the care, respect and believing that we have for each other.

We are courageous to do what is right … even when at times it is difficult. We are transitioning our schools to 21st century learning cultures with our flipped classrooms, project-based learning, and blended classrooms. It is an exciting time.

Our students are learners, readers, scientists, writers and explorers. Our teachers are facilitators, mentors and coaches. Our classrooms are workshops, learning labs and collaborative spaces. Every day we create a sense of community working together for every person to be his/her best.

Some of our exemplary programs include our Teen Court, Looping Program, Whole Brain Teaching, Professional Learning Communities, Project Based Learning, PLTW and STEM. We provide additional support for our students before and after school and our teachers are available for questions and will help our students at all times.

We are so proud of our teachers who guide the efforts of our learners. They have high expectations for our students and do everything they can to help them to reach success.

Our teachers attend professional development to improve what they do everyday. They challenge each other to use new and exciting techniques while incorporating the latest technology for learning in the classroom.

It does take a village to educate a child. We are just as proud of our bus drivers, custodians, aides, food service employees, maintenance team, and all the support staff that care daily for each and every student.

Like a family, we might not always agree, but we are always there for each other and that permeates the culture in every building.

Education in America is changing and at PTS we are making those changes and leading new ideas that prepare our students for their future.

All of our schools in the region are looking to build a trajectory for our students that will yield positive results for the future of our communities. The start of school is an exciting time.

We all know that the media likes a good story, but we really need to come together and stop the bashing of our schools and teachers. The staff in our schools is committed to helping our kids become their very best.

So, let’s come together, NWI, and celebrate the start of school by encouraging our kids, staff and teachers.
