Portage High School Class Visited by Senator Karen Tallian

PHS-Karen-TallianPortage High School was honored to have a guest speaker, Senator Karen Tallian, on April 13, 2016 in Mrs. Slamkowski’s Business Law classes. The purpose of the visit was to discuss how the Indiana budget works. Students learned where our state receives revenue and how this money is spent.

Prior to her arrival, students read her biography from the Indiana State web site and wrote a list of questions and concerns for her to address. Topics covered included minimum wage, Indiana’s living wage, vouchers, how money is disbursed in public education, medical marijuana, the wheel tax, and environmental concerns.

Most students felt they are now a lot more informed about how our state budget works and have a newfound appreciation for the bill making and budget processes.
