February is National Children's Dental Health Month
February is National Children's Dental Health Month! The CTE Dental Careers class at Portage High School is composed of high school seniors from Lake and Porter Counties interested in pursuing a career in the dental field. Mrs. Doane's Dental Careers students recently provided 6 local elementary schools with presentations on oral health and nutrition. Pictured here are PHS students from Mrs. Wiesjahn's Interpersonal Relations class in the dental classroom learning how to care for their teeth.

Indian Head Gets a Facelift
Portage High School is excited that Gretchen Hargarten, one of our talented art teachers and a PHS graduate, will be updating the iconic Indian head on the wall in The Commons. The original artwork, pieced with vinyl cut-outs, has been in desperate need of repair for many years. We can’t wait to see the new and improved Indian!

Mayor Delivers 2016 State of the City
On Thursday, February 18th, Mayor Snyder presented his State of the City speech to Portage High School students. The State of the City speech was followed by a question and answer session!

Jones Third Graders Visit Merrillville Community Planetarium
The third grade classes at Jones visited the Merrillville Community Planetarium on Thursday, Feb. 11th. This culminating activity helped the students make the solar system they have been studying come to life. They saw a presentation about our sun and it's neighbors which included interesting facts about planets, asteroids, and comets, as well as some of the constellations that can be seen this time of year.

MCJROTC Cadets Exceed Expectations
Cadets from Portage High School Marine Corps JROTC had their Regional Director's IG Inspection on 16 February 2016. The cadets performed admirably and "exceeded expectations" in all areas with no discrepancies or findings. The IG inspection is vital to ensure compliance with Marine Corps regulations and allows for the Regional Director to meet and speak with the 240 cadets that make up the PHS MCJROTC unit.
