South Shore CVA Offers Job Shadowing Opportunities to Portage High School Students in 2016

Fifty eight Portage High School students spent a day at the Visitors Center in Highland job shadowing employees from the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority. Students from AP Programming, Entrepreneurship, and the Microsoft Imagine Academy (Digital Applications & Responsibility) were in attendance.

Students were able to learn firsthand about careers such as accounting, marketing and sales, social media, web design, communications, finance, IT, public relations, human resources, and video production and how each career collaborates with each other to make their company successful.

Mr. David Mikesell, AP programming and Web design instructor and Mrs. Marjorie Slamkowski, who spearheads the Microsoft Academy, received affirmation that the skills the Business department at Portage High school teach such as knowing Microsoft Excel, presentations skills, communications skills, web design (HTML) and networking are vital to succeed in today’s businesses.

Cori Rhodes stated that one thing she took with her from the conference was in order to be successful one must be versatile and take the initiate to do a variety of difference tasks. Emily Adams was surprised to see how many of the speakers changed their career a multitude of times before they ended up in a job that they love.
