Portage Township Schools Update, February 5, 2016

Central Elementary
Students at Central Elementary had a wonderful opportunity to reach out to others in the Portage community through a food drive called Poppin’ for Pasta. The Portage Food Pantry is in great need of boxes of pasta, so the students brought in all types of pasta to help out this organization. They were encouraged to do so by our P.S.O. Popcorn Parents, who rewarded the kids who participated in this with a bag of popcorn. It worked out well for all involved.

Jones Elementary
Gratitude was our core value for the month of January, so the 5th grade students of Jones Elementary celebrated gratitude by giving back to the their school.

On Friday afternoon, a large number of the 5th grade students volunteered to work with the secretary, custodian, classroom teachers, computer coordinator, home school adviser, art teacher and media clerk. They spent their time cleaning, decorating bulletin boards, reading to classes, organizing supplies, listening to students read, and many other helpful activities. In all, 55 service hours were accumulated in just one day's time! We are thankful for our grateful 5th graders.

Dr. Keary Bewick DDS visited our 4th and 5th grade classes at Saylor. Dr. Bewick's presentation included information on proper brushing and flossing, as well as what kind of foods are good for your body but bad for your teeth. In addition, Saylor students received a new toothbrush to continue practicing good dental hygiene. We were happy to have Dr. Bewick visit with us today.
