Sass Second: February 2016

Jennifer-SassOld Man Winter has been good to us this year! It’s hard to believe I am typing this on a 52 degree day. Let’s keep this rolling and hang up our hat and mittens for the year. We are heading into testing season and it is important that we help our students understand the importance of these tests.

Dr. Weigel will be hosting Coffee with the Superintendent on February 9 in our Media Center from 3:00-4:00, all parents and staff are encouraged to attend.

Our sophomores will begin taking the ISTEP+ Part One on February 29. This is a graduation requirement by the state. Also, our juniors and seniors will be taking the Accuplacer test that correlates with their PSAT test scores and can impact their financial aid beyond high school. Please stress the importance of these tests and if you have any testing questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Guidance Office. During our Tribe Time, our sophomores and juniors will be learning more about their individual PSAT test results from the test in October. There are many tools to help students improve their scores before taking the SAT.

Our Guidance department has been meeting individually with students to plan their schedules for next year. The 2016-2017 school year schedule will be given to students and parents at the end of this school year. The Guidance counselors will be available the week of June 6 to discuss schedules and make changes. Schedule changes will not take place after this time so we can keep our classes balanced.

Our incoming Freshman parents are encouraged to attend our 8th Grade Parent Night on February 23 at 6:30 and our senior parents are encouraged to attend our Financial Aid Night on February 24 at 6:00 to learn about funding post-secondary education. Both meetings will be held in the east auditorium; enter through Door A.

Do you struggle with Parent Portal and/or want to learn more about Schoology? We are having a Parent Hour Open House on February 25th from 6:00-7:00 to help parents access student grades and learn about Schoology. Also, we will be displaying the talents of our students in our Media Center. Please enter Door D in the fieldhouse. This is a casual, open hour where staff members will be on hand to help with the computer programs and answer questions. We would love to see you all there!

The prom will be here before we know it! This year’s prom is on Saturday May 7 and students must have a 90% attendance rate to attend. It is imperative we continue to stress the importance of good attendance. Remember, poor student attendance may result in loss of driving privileges, work permit and prom attendance. Good attendance at school encourages good employment attendance.

Finally, please remember we have a Late Start Wednesday on February 3 and students are off February 12 and February 15. So far, it looks like we will not need to use our eLearning days because of weather! Keep your fingers crossed.

If you have any questions, suggestions or comments, please do not hesitate to drop me an email or call. I appreciate your thoughts. Make it a great day and make good choices!
