IU Northwest Opens Fall 2015 Enrollment for Adult Education Classes

rot1The Center for Urban and Regional Excellence at Indiana University Northwest offers a leading Adult Education program that promotes professional development, lifelong learning and personal enrichment for residents throughout Northwest Indiana.

These non-credit programs prepare individuals for productive employment, help professionals advance their careers, provide employees with work skills development, and assist companies that want to invest in their employees through customized work-related training and certification programs.

Evening and weekend classes are offered at the Gary campus as well as a variety of online courses.

Among the offerings available this fall:

BUSINESS AND COMPUTER COURSES

Digital Media / Social Networking
This course will illustrate how new media can be used most effectively and successfully. Business professionals will learn how to use and take advantage of digital media resources to grow, enhance and improve their business profitability and productivity. Personal users of Digital Media/Social Networking will also gain valuable information, knowledge and insight. Two four-week sessions to choose from.

Fee: $159 (per 4-week session)
Dates: September 14 – October 5 (Session 1) and October 19 – November 9 (Session 2)

Entrepreneurship – Preparation, Planning, Profit and Production
This course will teach the fundamentals of entrepreneurship and will focus on the business plan, moving from ideas to realization, understanding the process, research and market analysis, increasing efficiency, creating the perfect “elevator pitch,” and more.

Fee: $199 (optional textbook not included)
Dates: September 14 – October 12

Fundamentals of Proposal Writing and Stewardship
This course will provide the information, skills and tools needed to write successful grant proposals. Participants will learn how and where to find potential funders and new funding sources that will be the best fit for your organization. The course will also address networking strategies with funders, how to organize a successful grant writing campaign, how to create a complete proposal package, and how to manage the grants when they arrive.

Introduction to Word – Microsoft Word 2013
This course is designed for students who are new to working with Microsoft Word. It will teach the core functions of Word such as creating, editing, formatting and printing letters and reports; copying and pasting; printing and saving files; adjusting margins; formatting text; paragraph indents, tabs and line spacing; and much more. Students will also learn how to create tables, insert headers and footers, and insert pictures and graphics.

Introduction to Excel – Microsoft Excel 2013
This course is designed for students who are new to working with spreadsheets. Students will learn how to navigate Excel to accomplish tasks such as creating and editing basic spreadsheets; working with formulas and functions; creating and formatting charts and graphs; and more. Students will become comfortable with Excel’s capabilities and will gain the necessary skills to create, edit, format, and print basic Microsoft Excel 2013 spreadsheets.

Professional Skills for Climbing the Corporate Ladder
This course is designed for everyone who is looking to make a positive and lasting impression during the job search process. Young graduates just entering the workforce and seasoned professionals looking for an exciting new opportunity will equally benefit from the knowledge, insight and guidance provided through this course. The course will address how to write an impressive, professional resume and have it stand out to potential employers; how to effectively use digital media such as LinkedIn, Monster, CareerBuilder and other resources to land your dream job; and how to successfully prepare for and master the art of interviewing (including phone, Skype and in-person interviews).

Dates: November 7, November 14 and November 21

MUSIC AND ARTS

History of African American Art
This introductory course will explore pivotal movements and periods during art history of which African Americans contributed through their creativity - as part of the visual culture in the artistic landscape of America. Participants will learn about the movements, periods, styles, language and ideas that are so important in understanding African American art and its forms over time. Come learn, listen and share in this interesting course of cultural art history.

Fee: $175 (optional textbook not included)
Dates: October 19 – December 8
Day and Times: Monday evenings, and Monday/Tuesday evenings during final week; 6 – 8 p.m.

History of Jazz
Jazz spans a period of over 100 years and encompasses a range of music from ragtime to the present day. This course will explore the history of jazz and will provide an insightful overview of the different eras of jazz. Each class session will examine a different jazz style period including Early Jazz/New Orleans, Swing/Big Band, Bop, Cool Jazz, Hard Bop, Free Jazz and more.

Dates: September 16 - November 4
Day and Times: Wednesday evenings; 6 – 7:30 p.m.

Photography
This course will combine the “how to” and the “history” of great photography. Participants will learn the basics of how to effectively use the camera, adjust camera settings, upload and post digital photos to the Internet and more. The class will also incorporate a mixture of discussion, project work, and case studies of specific documentary photographers or collections. These case studies will be the basis of class discussions on methodologies, ethics, and techniques of documentary photography.

Still Life Drawing
This course will explore drawing techniques that include line, color, and shadow. Participants will receive instruction in laying out compositions and rendering still life imagery. The course will provide instruction on drawing shapes, how to effectively use color, and how to incorporate shapes, shadows and highlights. Upon completion of the course, participants will have created a still life drawing.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - MEDICAL AND HEALTH CARE

Certified Nurse Aide – CNA
This Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) training program is in compliance with and approved by the Indiana State Department of Health and exceeds the minimum number of training hours required by the state. Course content includes an introduction to the role of nurse aide, residents’ rights, infection control, medical concerns and emergency procedures, safety and first aid, an overview of the aging process, verbal and non-verbal communication, basic nursing skills and personal care procedures, and basic restorative services. Successful completion of both classroom and clinical portions leads to registration for the Certified Nurse Aide competency evaluation.

Fee: $699.00 (Day class) or $749.00 (Evening class)
Day Class Start Dates: August 24; September 14; September 28; October 12; November 9; and December 7.
Evening Class Start Date: October 26

Health Insurance Billing
Students will learn how to successfully file the HCFA-1500 form for major nationwide insurance programs, they will be exposed to the national diagnostic and procedural coding systems, and they will learn the process of filing commercial claim forms. Students will study the following topics: legal considerations, life cycle of an insurance claim, terminology common to all programs, the basic insurance claim, and the differences between the various insurance plans.

Fee: $450 (includes textbook)
Dates: September 28 – December 7
Day and Times: Monday evenings (9/28-11/9) and Monday/Wednesday evenings (11/16-12/7); 6 – 8:30 p.m.

Medical Terminology
This course will teach the language used in the medical and health care fields. This introductory course provides the groundwork and knowledge for future health care courses and is often necessary for employment in the medical field. The instructor will explain and simplify the pronunciation and definitions of medical words and language.

Dates: September 23– November 11

Pharmacy Technician Training
This program has been approved by the Indiana Board of Pharmacy. Successful completion of the course meets a requirement for obtaining a State of Indiana Pharmacy Technician license and helps prepare the student for the certification testing. The course content will include pharmacy and medical terminology, prescription processing, controlled substances, quality assurance, retail and hospital pharmacy, Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN), mathematical computations as they apply to the pharmacy, technician issues, sterile technique, and more.

Fee: $1,050 (includes textbooks)
Dates: September 15 – December 10
