Purdue Calumet Engineering Graduate Student Wins 2015 Steel Industry Video Prize

Purdue-Calumet-Engineering-Graduate-Student-Wins-2015-Steel-Industry-Video-PrizeA video presentation created by a Purdue University Calumet engineering graduate student and research assistant at the university’s Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation earned the grand prize at a recent international conference.

The student, Alrazy Sonet, of Bangladesh, received the $3,000 grand prize at the Association for Iron & Steel Technology’s AISTech 2015 conference for his three-minute presentation about the steel industry, titled “Steel: Backbone of the Universe.” The video was entered in the Real Steel Video Challenge.

Focus on steel industry as career field
The competition called for entrants to promote and brand the steel industry as a potential career field by summarizing the modern age of steel making, including such advancements as simulation, visualization and virtual training.

The video was presented at the President’s Award Breakfast, attended by more than 1,000 individuals.

More than 7,000 professionals attended AISTech 2015, which featured 108 technical sessions, and 543 technical presentations, while also attracting 549 companies and organizations.

Other graduate student presentations
Additionally, the conference featured 26 graduate student poster presentations and eight undergraduate student project presentations.

Purdue Calumet’s Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation (CIVS) entered two graduate student projects in the poster competition—one titled, “Investigation of Co-Injection of Natural Gas and Pulverized Coal in a Blast Furnace” and “Development of Interactive Virtual Training for Steel Safety: Chain Storage.”

Additionally, CIVS faculty and staff submitted seven technical papers on various steel producing-related topics. Purdue Calumet’s campus-based Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation is an interdisciplinary research center that combines advanced simulation techniques with 3-D visualization and virtual reality technologies to provide innovative solutions to business & industrial challenges.

According to Purdue Calumet CIVS Director, Professor and Interim Associate Vice Chancellor Chenn Zhou, Purdue Calumet students integrate in-depth academic theory and practical application to learn experientially while assisting industry collaborators and clients who use CIVS as a resource.
