Portage High School Health Department Winds Down 2014-15 School Year with Guest Speakers

PHS-Helath-Department-Release-2015-May-01The Health department at Portage High School has been very busy in these last few weeks of school. Classes are studying units on Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Drugs and CPR/AED use. Speakers have come to talk to health classes about the consequences of acquiring STD’s, how they are spread and how they are treated. Students were very interested in this Unit.

In the drug unit, classes broke into smaller groups to plan and present a radio public service announcement about drugs. Student’s chose from several different drugs they had an interest in, worked collaboratively and presented the information. This information included how to avoid the use of these drugs and how dangerous drugs can be to an individual if they form the lifestyle of using drugs.

Currently, health classes are being instructed on how to perform Adult, Child and Infant CPR as well as the use of an AED on an adult, child and infant. Techniques for conscious and unconscious choking victims have also been taught.
