Physician, Iraq War Veteran, Author to Visit IU Northwest

rot1On Monday, April 27, as part of the campus’s One Book … One Campus … One Community … reading initiative, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness, Dr. Antonio Webb will visit Indiana University Northwest to speak about his journey from overcoming life in the streets to becoming a renowned orthopedic surgeon. The event will begin at 4 p.m. and take place in the Bruce W. Bergland Auditorium, located in the Savannah Center.

Webb will discuss his life experiences as outlined in his new book, Overcoming the Odds: From War on the Streets of Louisiana, to the War on Terrorism in Iraq. In this book, Webb recounts the story of his disadvantaged childhood in Shreveport, La., where he was surrounded by poor influences, including a mother whose drug addiction made her a regular in the prison system and a younger brother who was sentenced to juvenile life in prison for armed robbery.

Webb also describes his experience in the military during the Iraq War, his eventual path to medical school, and his experience as a physician treating patients in Liberia during the deadly Ebola outbreak. Webb’s story of overcoming adversity promises to serve as an inspiration and example to all who attend.

This event is sponsored by the Pre-Professional Club at IU Northwest; IU School of Medicine-Northwest; Office of Diversity, Equity and Multicultural Affairs; and Office of Student Activities.
