IU School of Medicine – NW hosts Pre-Medical Student Conference April 11, 2015

rot1Current pre-med students looking to apply to medical school, as well as high school students with aspirations of one day becoming a doctor, will benefit from the Pre-Medical Student Conference at Indiana University School of Medicine – Northwest (IUSM-NW).

The free medical admissions conference, which will educate attendees on the entire “Freshman to Physician” experience at the Northwest campus, takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Saturday, April 11 at Indiana University School of Medicine – Northwest, located in the Dunes Medical/Professional Building on the IU Northwest campus in Gary, Ind.

Attendees will learn about how IU Northwest's pre-professional program prepares students for medical school, get advice on being admitted to medical school, learn about medical research opportunities and scholarships available to undergraduates, and hear from current students about their own experiences. There will also be an opportunity to meet with pre-med faculty advisors.

While IUSM-NW students have the option to move downstate to complete the latter part of their medical education with residencies at various Indianapolis hospitals, more and more Northwest medical students are choosing to stay local to take advantage of the smaller campus atmosphere known for its plentiful opportunities, typically in shorter supply at other larger campuses.

Current medical students now immersed in their first year at IUSM-NW continually tout the smaller class sizes and unique project-based learning (PBL) curriculum of the Northwest campus as advantageous to their education.

“The way it’s structured, it forces you to constantly be studying one thing all the time,” explained Sara Torabi, the second sibling in her family to attend IUSM-NW. “Because we have a small class size, it’s impossible to fall behind. I like the curriculum here. I feel like it forces you to keep studying the material.”

Torabi, who graduated from IU Northwest with a degree in psychology, intends to follow the complete “Freshman to Physician” experience at the Northwest campus. She prefers attending medical school close to home and she hopes to complete all four years of medical school at the Northwest campus rather than travel downstate to Indianapolis.

A continental breakfast and lunch will be served. For more information, or to register for the medical admissions conference by April 6, visit http://iusm-nw.medicine.iu.edu/pre-medical/ or call (219) 980-6504.
