Portage High School Guidance Good News, November 6, 2014

Angelo-PedrozzaWhen Angelo Pedroza, a junior at Portage High School, first heard about the LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens) organization, he wasn’t sure he wanted to join. However, after being one of 60 students selected to attend the National Youth Seminar for LULAC, he is happy that he showed interest, not knowing at the time where it would lead.

Before involvement in LULAC, Angelo heard about SLYCE (South Shore Leadership Youth for Community Engagement) through his nephew’s involvement. He decided to join SLYCE and needed a sponsor. Angelo obtained sponsorship through lULAC and is now an active member.

Angelo was nominated to attend LULAC’S National Youth Leadership Seminar in Washington DC, which was held October 1-5, 2014. Only 60 Hispanic students from across the nation were selected; Angelo was the only student from Indiana. During this week in Washington D.C., Angelo met congressman Pete Visclosky, a senator from Puerto, the head director of Telemundo and the CEO of the Nissan corporation, plus many other distinguished officials. The purpose of the week was to discuss Hispanic education issues relating to the STEM fields. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Angelo was able to lead a conversation in Congressmen Visclosky’s group, discussing ways to increase Hispanic students choosing STEM careers. This opportunity has given Angelo connections with people across the country.

Angelo believes that helping others is important. He has found this connection through LULAC. He also organized an upcoming event, “The Mayor’s Campaign to End Bullying”. The event will take place November 7th, at 5:30 PM in the Portage High School East auditorium. The event is open to the public.
