Portage High School Offers Advanced Physical Conditioning

PHS-LogoAt Portage High School, one of the Advanced Physical Education courses offered to our student’s is Advance Physical Conditioning (APC). The “APC” course is an advanced weight training class offered to members of our athletic teams. The class is focused upon athletic enhancement and the student’s follow a core strength program not centered on any one sport but on development of athleticism and power. During the course student’s focus on Olympic lifting as it applies to any and all sports. Workouts focus on functional strength and the development of balance and explosive power.

The students in the class lift five days per week and are tested before and after the eight week micro-cycles. The core of the program is based upon the Apex system used by the University of Nebraska and strength guru Boyd Epley. Individualized programs are established based upon each individual’s current levels of strength and fitness. Members of the class will have the opportunity to compete in the Northwest Indiana Powerlifting Competition in January.

Last year the Portage Strength Team placed 2nd in the championships behind Lake Central High School. Several Portage athlete’s won individual weight classifications and the Indians broke several meet records. The class makes it possible for multiple sport athletes at Portage to still be able to improve strength and athleticism while having to stay after school for practice. Most coaches use the class to supplement their own sport specific workouts.
