Portage Township Schools Offers Free Summer Program for Teenagers

PHS-LogoBeing the parent of an adolescent is no easy task--anyone who's been there will agree. Keeping them safe, but engaged in their community, is one of the toughest responsibilities a parent can face. They are still in need of supervision, but few opportunities exist for age appropriate and affordable programs. The Search Institute identified 40 assets that students need to possess in order to maximize their educational experience, avoid negative risks, and be prepared for the world beyond high school.

These studies show that adolescents who feel connected with their school through sports and activities tend to be more successful. With this in mind, Portage Township Schools is offering to our middle and high school students an innovative project now in its second year. Program 240 gives PTS students entering grades 6 through 12 a unique summer experience, allowing adolescents to maintain a connection with their school system in a stimulating but not wholly academic setting. Staffed by licensed, student focused educators and completely free to Portage families, this revolutionary experience allows your students to get to know the school building and staff and come to the next school year more comfortable and prepared.

Housed at Portage High School and Fegely Middle School, this program offer crafts, cooking, sports, games, team building, field trips, access to computers and the media centers and the students choose their own activities. Meals and transportation are provided, and best of all, working parents have the peace of mind knowing that their students are supervised in a secure environment from 10am to 2pm two days a week, from June 15-July 30. Working together, parents and school staff can set our students up for success. Please contact your school's front office for more details.
