Author to discuss The House on Mango Street as part of One Book…One Campus…One Community reading initiative
Sandra Cisneros, an award-winning author of The House on Mango Street, will join the Indiana University Northwest campus via Skype on 3 p.m., Monday, April 7 at a One Book…One Campus…One Community celebration. The community is invited to the Bruce W. Bergland Auditorium, located in the Savannah Center, to see the interview.
The House on Mango Street was selected as the campus’s 2013 – 2014 novel, in which the IU Northwest campus, as well as the surrounding communities, have reflected upon the themes and learning points found in the book through discussion groups, presentations, theatrical and cultural events, and classroom curriculum.
Cisneros’s virtual visit will allow her to have an open discussion with attendees to discuss the book, share her personal story, and answer questions the campus and community may have pertaining to the novel, or her life experiences.
The celebration will also highlight the themes found in the book through theatrical performances by area students, who are also familiar with The House on Mango Street, as part of the One Book…One Campus…One Community reading initiative.
About Sandra Cisneros
Cisneros is the author of several books including Caramelo, Loose Woman, and, most recently, Have You Seen Marie?
She is the founder of two organizations that serve writers, the Macondo Foundation and the Alfredo Cisneros del Moral Foundation.
Cisneros is also the organizer of the Latino MacArthur Fellows.
She has been honored with numerous awards including the MacArthur Fellowship, two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships, and a Texas Medal of the Arts.
Cisneros has been writing for more than 45 years, publishing for more than 35, and earning her living by her pen for more than 18 years. Her books have been translated into more than 20 languages and is published internationally.
