Singapore Math in Second Grade

Myers-ElementarySecond grade is in the swing with Singapore Math Strategies! Portage Township Schools adopted Singapore Math a few years ago. This series emphasizes the three concepts of concrete, pictorial, and abstract as the best way to teach mathematics to children. The idea is to teach children to “think math” through the use of those concepts. We emphasize mental math through math sprints, a timed fact check using mixed addition and subtraction practice from the same fact family. The children quickly become proficient at their facts and then we bump it up, constantly challenging them!

A great problem solving strategy from Singapore Math is Bar Modeling. It shows the child how to set up a word problem in a visual way and reinforces what information the problem is asking for by restating the question as an answer sentence.

As you can see, Myers teachers are preparing second graders to think Math!
