Pow Wow Issues 4-7

Portage-High-School-SignThrough the first half of the school year, the Portage High School student-produced newspaper the Pow Wow has published seven issues of the eight-page, comprehensive look at news relevant to Portage High School students.

Issue 4: Nov. 2, 2012

The Pow Wow provided complete localized coverage of Election Day 2012. Read about what local groups were doing to back Presidential candidates, the candidates that vied for Portage School Board seats and other election previews. This issue also features a recap of National Honor Society inductions, a look back at the girls and boys cross country seasons and a profile on a student who tested out of Pre-AP Pre-Calculus to earn his way into Advanced Calculus as a junior.

Issue 5: Nov. 16, 2012

A front page story in Issue 5 of the Pow Wow previewed the PHS Fall Play “The 39 Steps.” Plus, teachers approve a new contract, former Portage residents ride out Hurricane Sandy and a preview of Portage’s winter sports season.

Issue 6: Nov. 30, 2012

Issue 6 was filled with great content as coaches weigh in on whether or not athletes should play multiple sports, students share their experiences after being at Southlake Mall when the shooting took place and the girls cross country team earns the fall sports Team GPA Award. Plus, the features section profiled substitute teacher Gina Easton and speech team member Mikaela Terry.

Issue 7: Dec. 21, 2012

The final Pow Wow of 2012 was released on the last day before holiday break. The news section informs readers about the retirement of school board member Glenda Owens, the alteration of the date and location of the school’s winter formal and more. The sports section includes a recap of the Harlem Wizards visit to PHS and an MVP article on boys basketball sophomore Jordan Simpson. The features section includes advice from PHS students who graduated midterm in previous years, while the opinion section voices a guest commentary from Maj. John Johnston.
