Myers Elementary Raises Money with McTeacher Night

At the elementary level, teachers fill a variety of roles to help their students succeed.  During the school day, teachers take on the duties of educators, friends, counselors, helpers, doctors and loved ones.  On Tuesday night teachers from Myers Elementary School added one more title to that list by serving their students in a new way- as workers at McDonald’s!

The annual McTeacher Night event was held to raise money for Myers and to bring the community and school together.  Principal Jeff King enjoys seeing his students, parents and teachers interact while supporting the school.

“It’s a great way for us to get together for an evening to have fun as a student body, as a staff and as a family.  It’s exciting for us to be able to get together outside of the school day,” he said.

The McDonald’s on Central Avenue in Portage was kind enough to put on the function.  The restaurant donated 15 percent of the proceeds from the three hour time span to Myers in order to help the school provide quality educational experiences for the students.

King was thrilled with the turnout as students and parents flocked the restaurant to show their support.  This night is their one opportunity each year to see their teachers in an unusual environment.

“I think they really get a kick out of it.  They are just tickled pink to be able to see their teachers working behind the counter, at the register, in the drive thru and in the lobby,” King said.

However, the students were not the only ones having a good time.

“The question is- who has more fun, the staff or the students?  It might be pretty close!”  King laughed.

In addition to the 15 percent of the proceeds from the McDonald’s purchases, Myers raised money through donations from parents and community members, who gave “tips” to the teachers.  McTeacher Night 2011 was a positive experience for everyone involved.
