PNC Continuing Education Gardening Course

Purdue University North Central Office of Continuing Education, in conjunction with Taltree Arboretum and Gardens, is offering a three-part, non-credit gardening course. PNC

This course will meet PNC-Porter County, 600 Vale Park Road, Valparaiso, on Wednesdays, Sept. 15 to 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. The registration fee is $99.

The first course in the series will cover "preserving the bounty." Students will learn the proper techniques, as recommended by the USDA, for canning, freezing and drying. Many of the techniques that were used years ago may not be safe and this course will present the safest ways to preserve foods.

The second class will help explain how to put a lawn and garden to bed for the winter. Doing this properly helps make for a healthier lawn and garden next season and fall is the best time to improve cool season lawns.

The final class will show how to use gathered plant material to accent the home, explaining which plants preserve well and when and where to gather them. Each student will design a grapevine wreath using provided dried plants and flowers.

Information about these or other courses is available through the PNC Office of Continuing Education, 219.785.5200, ext. 5343, or at www.pnc.edu/ce. Persons with disabilities requiring accommodations should contact ext. 5343.
