Monday afternoon, Calumet College of St. Joseph welcomed people who have supported the Athletic Department to Lost Marsh Golf Course in Hammond for the 18th annual Calumet College of St. Joseph Golf Outing. Over 80 people were brought together for a perfect summer afternoon filled with fun shared memories. It was a great way to raise funds for CCSJ student athletes!

“Today is something that we want to use not only as a fundraiser, but also as a get-together,” said Mike DeVader, Assistant Athletic Director for Calumet College of St. Joseph. “We can have some people who work so hard for us come together on a sunny day like today, play some golf, talk some business, but mainly letting all of that go and supporting the Athletic Department.”

Located in Whiting, Calumet College of St. Joseph’s Athletic Department has grown under Athletic Director Rick Torres, who came into the position last year. There are over 300 student athletes, a record for the college, and fundraisers such as the golf outing help keep the Athletic Department growing as well as fostering a tight-knit bond between athletes and their community.

“I really like to use this event as an awareness for folks coming in who may not generally come out this way,” Torres explained. “We want to make sure we have a networking system set in place. We want people to come out, make friends, have fun, and hopefully, people will come back, not because they think they have to, but because they want to.”

As guests arrived at Lost Marsh Golf Course, they were greeted by student athletes volunteering for the event. Volleyball players helped sign people in and encouraged everyone to enter into the raffle to receive free door prizes like mugs and Calumet College of St. Joseph hats. As guests mingled and ate a delicious breakfast courtesy of CCSJ, baseball players helped guests with their golf clubs and carts.

“This event is really important for the Department,” said Brock Budzielek, a sophomore and baseball player at CCSJ. “It lets the community help people and see what CCSJ is all about.”

As the guests began to prepare for a round of golf, Torres spoke to the crowd and thanked them for coming out for a good cause. He then welcomed Amy McCormack, Calumet College of St. Joseph’s new and first female, president, to address the crowd.

“This event brings the community together in a fun, social way,” McCormack said. “We get to have a good time, enjoy nature and the beautiful golf course, and get to meet people within the community.”

As the outing began, guests made their way onto the course in groups of four and began a four-person scramble, which means guests competed against other members of their group. Despite the competition, guests were relaxed and enjoyed their time spent with other members of the community, all while supporting a college they all admire.

“I’m a big supporter of Calumet College of St. Joseph,” said Robert Lake, who has attended this event for the past six years. “The people who come out to this event every year are always fun. It is a good time and it’s a good event.”

The weather was on Calumet College of St. Joseph’s side Monday afternoon as guests, students, and faculty members enjoyed a relaxing day of golf and fundraising for a school that has such an amazing influence in the community.
