Harbor Automotive Group has won dozens of service awards over the years. The company believes in the value of making the customer’s experience pleasant, no matter what circumstance brings them to the lot. In the case of Dave Gulick, mechanic for Harbor Buick GMC, the circumstance is often a product of his own expertise and work ethic.
Gulick has been with Harbor Automotive for about 9 years (and with General Motors for 45 years.) In that timeframe, he’s built a steady, loyal base of customers who trust him for the quality of work he performs and his ability to put his mind to solve just about any problem when it comes to car trouble.
“I’m a stubborn old fool,” Gulick joked. “If I can’t fix it, I won’t give up. I’ll stick with it until I figure it out. It might take me a while, but I’ll usually figure it out.”
Perseverance is the thing that makes Gulick tick, and he’s no stranger to the task.
“I’ve been working on cars ever since I was a little kid. I just love working with my hands and fixing things,” Gulick said. “I love the challenge, finding unusual challenges that are mind-boggling. That’s the pleasure with this business, it’s always something different, it’s never the same!”
Gulick comes from a long line of family members who work with their hands, in construction and other craftsmen positions; he just so happens to be the only mechanic in the bunch. Needless to say, he’s the guy all his family members call when they have car trouble (much to his begrudging amusement), but he doesn’t mind much. After all, he is always up for the challenge.
When it comes to working for Harbor Buick GMC, Gulick cherishes his coworkers.
“The people I work for are nice,” Gulick said. “The owner and I get along well, he’s been good to me, and the people I work with are great to work with.”
He’s come to value his customers, too. He strives to do what’s right by them no matter how tricky the job. In fact, Gulick will assist anyone with their car trouble.
“We just had an issue the other day where a guy from Ohio had come in because his car had broken down,” Gulick said. “It took us two days to figure out his situation, and then he called me the next day and said he’s going to come back and buy me lunch for all my help.”
Gulick always seems to go the extra mile to be helpful, even outside of work (he coached softball with his daughter for 8 years and was a Scout leader with his son for four years.) When he received this compliment, he accepted it with frankness.
“That’s just the type of person I am,” he said. “It’s just my nature, what can I tell you? I’m not bragging about it, it’s just the way I am and the way I was raised.”
