The second phase of a program providing NIPSCO customers and employees with up to $17,500 off all-electric Nissan LEAFs is underway through June 30, program partners announced Thursday.
“South Shore Clean Cities is excited to build upon the momentum from the first phase of the project to allow for expanded use of electric vehicles in the NIPSCO territory at a reduced cost to consumers,” South Shore Clean Cities Executive Director Carl Lisek said. “With reduced emissions, improved air quality, cost savings and vehicle sales boosting the local economy, everyone wins.”
Nissan partnered with South Shore Clean Cities to extend a special incentive of $10,000 off the MSRP to all eligible NIPSCO employees and customers who purchase a LEAF from a Nissan dealer. After the sale, customers can apply for a federal tax credit of up to $7,500.
"We're a proud home of the Nissan Leaf and we're excited to see more of these fuel efficient vehicles out on the road," said Kevin Green of Southlake Nissan. "These cars can average over 100 miles per gallon and really can help reduce emissions here in Northwest Indiana. Anyone looking for a new car should come in for a test drive today to take one for a spin!"
To receive the discount, customers must provide a copy of their NIPSCO electric bill and the Fleetail Certification Code B46251.
During the first phase of the project -- which ran February 15, 2017 through March 31, 2017 – local Nissan dealers sold about a dozen Nissan LEAFs.
One NIPSCO customer who purchased a Nissan LEAF through the program was the City of Hobart, which is also a South Shore Clean Cities member. The city assigned the vehicle to Event Director Nikki Lopez.
“I am ecstatic to be driving the new Nissan LEAF,” Lopez said. “It gives me the opportunity to share Hobart's green initiatives with residents throughout our community. It is a dream to drive, the perfect addition to any city fleet.”
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator, the addition of 12 all-electric Nissan LEAFs to Region roads will result in carbon dioxide emission reductions equal to that created by removing 6,392 gallons of gasoline from the marketplace. The gasoline reductions from the vehicles purchased also represent the amount of carbon sequestered by 54 acres (roughly the size of 50 football fields) of U.S. forests in one year.
The Nissan LEAF is America’s best-selling electric car. The LEAF is 100 percent electric and uses no gasoline. As a result, it runs with no tailpipe, no fumes and zero emissions. Manufactured completely in Smyrna, Tennessee, the LEAF features an available 107-mile range, with seamless acceleration. LEAFs drive almost three times further than the average driver’s daily needs, making it an ideal electric vehicle choice for everyday commutes.
South Shore Clean Cities is hosting two Ride & Drive events at Southlake Nissan, 4201 E. Lincoln Highway in Merrillville, where interested NIPSCO customers and employees can test drive Nissan LEAFs. The events will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 27 and June 24.
